THE NEW LABOUR CODE BILL AND ITS PROSPECTS FOR WOMEN IN THE UNORGANISED SECTOR

Women in the workforce have made great progress in recent decades. They break down all barriers and contribute to the economy as a whole. A significant segment of India's labour force comprises the unorganised sector; approximately 41% of India's workforce is women labour (PLFS 2023-24). However, this sector is characterised by various shortcomings, including inadequate wages and unsafe working environments. The majority of women work in unorganised sectors and get low wages due to low levels of skill, illiteracy, and ignorance, thus facing high levels of exploitation. So, there is an urgent need to revive the economy with labour laws in the unorganised sector for changing the condition of women. The proposed New Labour Code Bill seeks to address these challenges by consolidating existing labour laws into four comprehensive codes: The Code on Wages (2019), The Industrial Relations Code (2020), The Social Security Code (2020), and The Occupational Safety, Health, and Working Conditions Code (2020). The objective of this study is to examine the launch of a new labour code on unorganised women workers. This article aims to examine the impact of these bills on working women in the unorganised sector.
