Education is the key that helps in empowering the people of any nation. It is a powerful means for reducing poverty and inequality. Education, undoubtedly contributes to development. It is universally accepted that literacy rates have a positive impact on health and other social issues such as crude birth and death rates, mean age of marriage etc. It raises income, improves health and increases productivity. Education helps people to gain access to knowledge, skills, jobs and participation in society. The National Policy of Education (1986) stressed the need for universalisation of elementary education, eradication of illiteracy and skill development in the age group of 15-35; this was reiterated by the Programme of Action (1992). In this paper the Inter relationship of education and human development has been discussed.
